Ryuzo Fukuhara, born in 1965 in Japan, graduated in 1989 from the Academy of Arts in Nagoya, Japan, with a degree in experimental design. He began dancing with two influential Buto dancers, Semi-Maru from Sankaijuku and Min Tanaka, from whom he learned the Butoh technique during his studies. In 2000, he started working as a dance artist in Europe. During his residency in Europe, Ryuzo developed his dance method, and in 2006 he received the 2nd prize at the solo dance competition at 11MASDANZA – International Festival of Contemporary Dance in the Canary Islands in Spain. In 2010 he was invited to teach a dance master class with director Ismael Ivo at La Biennale di Venezia in Italy. In the same year, Ryuzo received the status of self-employed in culture at the Ministry of Culture in Slovenia. In September 2016, he was invited as a guest lecturer on a graduate course and a dance course at Towson University. At the FringeArts Festival in Philadelphia, USA, he also performed a dance project entitled “RHIZOMAS” – in collaboration with the music group Wormhole Superette of Philadelphia. Ryuzo has been teaching Butoh dance at the Faculty of Arts, University of Ljubljana, since 2013.
