Creative laboratory Crater

Creative laboratory Crater, a laboratory for invasive plant processing and non-invasive exchange practices, is a long-term design and research project which opens up opportunities for sustainable ways of creating in the vastness of post-industrial ecosystems. It is created as part of our project, as a response of a group of interdisciplinary artists to life in the so-called “Capitalocene”, an era in which we are witnessing global species extinction, climate change and growing social imbalances due to dominant economic doctrines.

Within the existing context, the project explores ways to create symbiotic ecosystems in which the human-creator becomes an actor who actively co-creates balance within the damaged nature.

As a starting point, Creative laboratory Crater takes the issue of the so-called alien invasive plants. Instead of eradicating them, the project will be concerned with how to mobilize creative skills to provide sustainable ways of living, evoked by the use of invasive plant biomass.

During the implementation of the project, a degraded area in Ljubljana will be revived, on which a unique urban ecosystem overgrown with invasive plants has developed. The construction pit, which has been abandoned for more than two decades and has been known as the Bežigrad Crater, will be turned into a laboratory for processing invasive plants. In a carpenter’s workshop, a mushroom-growing laboratory and a paper-manufacturing workshop, the excess plant biomass will be tested as a building block in the design of new materials and products. The knowledge gained through practical research will be shared with the local community through workshops, meetings and lectures organized on site.

Upon arrangement, the location will also be available for the implementation of activities of all those who work in urban ecology or agriculture, or those who are trying to change the relationship between man and nature through their artistic and activist practices.
